Globally, the percentage of people living in extreme poverty dropped from 36% in 1990 to 10% in 2015. However, the pace of change is slowing down, and the COVID-19 crisis poses a risk of reversing decades of progress in poverty alleviation.
\nA new study published by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research warns of the economic ramifications resulting from the global pandemic that could increase global poverty by up to half a billion people or 8% of the total population. After decades of consistent decline, the number of people suffering from hunger \u2013 measured by the prevalence of malnutrition \u2013 began to slowly increase again in 2015. Today, there are more than 820 million people who regularly go to bed hungry, with approximately 135 million suffering from acute hunger largely due to man-made conflicts, climate change, and economic depression. While significant progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, billions of people \u2013 most of them in rural areas\u2013 still lack these essential services. Globally, one in every three people does not have access to safe drinking water, and two out of every five people lack basic facilities for handwashing with soap and water. Education enables social and economic mobility and is a crucial means to escape poverty. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made towards facilitating access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, especially for girls. However, about 260 million children were still out of school in 2018 \u2013 they represent approximately one-fifth of the world's population in this age group. The world is making progress towards goal 7, with encouraging signs that energy is becoming more sustainable and widely available. Accelerated access to electricity has begun in poor countries, energy efficiency continues to improve, and renewable energy is achieving remarkable gains in the electricity sector.

A comprehensive and sustainable orientation to manufacturing, coupled with innovation and infrastructure development, can unleash dynamic and competitive economic forces that generate employment and income opportunities. It plays a key role in introducing and promoting new technologies, facilitating international trade, and enabling the efficient use of resources.
\nHowever, the world still has a long way to go to take full advantage of this potential. The nature of the oceans includes global systems that make the Earth habitable for humans. They provide and regulate rainfall, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe through the seas.
\nThus, carefully managing these essential global resources is a key feature of a sustainable future. Nature is critical to our survival: nature provides us with our oxygen, regulates our weather patterns, pollinates our crops, produces our food, feed and fibre. But it is under increasing stress. Human activity has altered almost 75 per cent of the earth\u2019s surface, squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet.

Conflict, insecurity, weak institutions and limited access to justice remain a great threat to sustainable development. The number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million in 2018, the highest level recorded by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in almost 70 years.
