The Scientific Affairs Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, held a scientific symposium entitled (The History of Goalball for the Blind in Iraq), and the lecturer in the Team Sports Branch, Lect. Dr. Saja Khaled Jassim, lectured at it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Saja reviewed the history of the establishment of the first school for teaching the blind, which was brought to Iraq for the first time by the French missionary (Barry Pierre) to teach the blind there some principles of Braille. The first institute for the blind was opened under the name (Al-Nour Institute) in 1949. Likewise, The first institute for the blind affiliated with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in 1949 AD was called (The Queen Hazima Institute), in 1955 AD, the local administration in Baghdad Governorate established Al-amal Institute providing services to the deaf, mute, mentally retarded and blind people, in addition to opening two institutes Al-rja\u2019a and vocational rehabilitation to care for the mentally retarded in the year 1968 AD.<\/span><\/p>\n

She also pointed out the beginnings of sports for people with disabilities in Iraq as a competitive sport in 1981 AD, with few events and a limited number of athletes, and their numbers increased after the Iran-Iraq war, when a special body was formed to care for war fighters (currently Al-salam Center) headed by Dr. Suhail Najm Al-Obaidi in 1981 AD. The Iraqi Al-Majd Federation for Sports for People with Disabilities was also established under the General Directorate of Sports of the Ministry of Youth in 1982, in addition to the establishment of the Al-Saqr Al-Arabi Club and Wissam Al-Majd Club in 1983. The first national goalball teams for seniors and youth were also formed in 1988, and in 2003 the Federation was established. Iraqi goalball team for the blind after holding democratic elections at Al-Shaab International Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n

This symposium achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth goal: quality education.<\/span><\/p>\n
