The Planning and Studies Division at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, in cooperation with the Scientific Affairs Unit, organized a workshop entitled “Sports Doping and Its Negative Effects on Athletes.” It was presented by Prof. Dr. Luma Samir Hammoudi and Assistant Lecturer Maryam Liwa from the Team Sports Branch.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The presenters explained the concept of stimulants, which include a variety of substances used to enhance athletic performance, such as anabolic steroids, growth hormones, stimulants like caffeine, and medications that boost endurance and strength. While these substances can improve physical and muscular performance, strength, and endurance, they also pose significant health risks and side effects.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The presenters highlighted the major negative effects of stimulants, including an increased risk of heart and liver disease, behavioral and mood changes, weakened immune system, hearing loss, hair loss, disruptions in growth and sexual development in young people, and a heightened risk of addiction. They also noted the social and legal consequences of steroid use, such as suspension from sports competitions and legal penalties.<\/span><\/h4>\n

They covered various types of performance-enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, stimulant medications, estrogen, and thyroxine.<\/span><\/h4>\n

This workshop aligns with the fourth goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.<\/span><\/h4>\n
