The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, hosted a workshop under the patronage of its Dean, Prof. Dr. Fatima Abd Malih, and under the supervision of its head, Assist. Lect. Safia Ihsan Kamil. The workshop was conducted by a delegation from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, represented by Mr. Ahmed Abdul Amir and Ms. Israa Jawad Kazem. It was titled (Realistic Challenges in Combating Environmental Disasters).<\/span><\/h4>\n

During the workshop, Mr. Ahmed introduced the society and its mission, explaining that it is a public-benefit organization and a humanitarian entity that adheres to all provisions of international humanitarian law, as per the agreements ratified by the Republic of Iraq. He highlighted that the organization operates according to fundamental principles, including humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. He also outlined its organizational structure, which consists of a headquarters overseeing 18 branches\u2014one for each province\u2014connected to 83 offices. The administration is divided into a governing body and an executive body, supported by human and financial resources.<\/span><\/h4>\n

He elaborated on the organization\u2019s activities, which include relief efforts, disaster risk reduction, first aid, and health awareness, medical services and psychological support, water and sanitation, dissemination of international humanitarian law, restoring family links, awareness programs on war remnants, and youth and volunteer activities.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The workshop also covered the concept of disaster, defining it as a sudden catastrophic event that causes significant disruption to a community\u2019s functions, leading to widespread human, material, economic, and environmental losses that exceed the affected community\u2019s ability to cope using its resources. He explained that disaster management follows a sequential process, including preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.<\/span><\/h4>\n

At the conclusion of the workshop, the Assistant Dean for Scientific and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Suhad Hassib, presented the Iraqi Red Crescent delegation with letters of appreciation for their efforts in organizing such an informative workshop on combating environmental disasters and preparing for them. She expressed her wishes for their continued success in serving the country.<\/span><\/h4>\n

This workshop aligns with two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).<\/span><\/h4>\n
