The University Psychological Counseling Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Women\/University of Baghdad, under the patronage of the Dean, Prof. Fatima Abd Malih, and the supervision of the unit\u2019s director, Lect. Dr. Hind Salem hosted Mr. Issam Kshish, President of the Recovery Organization for Drug Harm Reduction, to present a scientific awareness workshop for undergraduate students titled: (Addiction and Its Psychological and Social Impact).<\/span><\/h4>\n

This workshop was held in conjunction with the activities of the Iraqi Anti-Drug Week.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The workshop addressed the various causes of addiction, emphasizing that it does not stem from a single factor. Rather, it is influenced by difficult economic conditions, cultural and educational aspects, and the impact of negative peer groups. Understanding these causes, the speaker explained, is essential for effective prevention. The session also covered the types of addiction, including drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and pharmaceutical dependence, along with the harmful effects each type has on both individuals and society.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The workshop highlighted several warning signs of addiction, such as social withdrawal, irritability, physical fatigue, irregular eating and drinking habits, and, in severe cases, resorting to theft or committing serious crimes such as murder or suicide.<\/span><\/h4>\n

In addition, the session reviewed Iraqi legislation related to combating addiction, stressing the importance of strictly enforcing legal measures against both users and dealers to curb the spread of this dangerous phenomenon.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The workshop concluded with an open discussion, during which students shared ideas and asked important questions about the topic. Informational brochures about the Recovery Organization were also distributed to enhance community awareness of addiction risks and prevention methods.<\/span><\/h4>\n

At the end of the event, the Dean presented a certificate of appreciation to the President of the Recovery Organization in recognition of his significant efforts in organizing this awareness workshop.<\/span><\/h4>\n

This workshop represents an important contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).<\/span><\/h4>\n
