The Rehabilitation, Employment and Follow-up Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, organized in cooperation and coordination with Dr. Maha Saber Koshy from the Ministry of Health/Nutrition Research Institute gave an awareness lecture to undergraduate students entitled (Healthy Weight and Physical Activity).
Dr. Maha confirmed that the normal or healthy body weight depends on several factors, such as age, height, and genetic factors. There are several ways to measure the natural or ideal body weight, but the most common method for adopting weights is the mathematical equation that divides the ideal weight based on height, as in the following method, such as weight the ideal weight for women according to height: Ideal weight in kilograms = 45 + 0.9× (height in centimeters − 150 centimeters), as well as measuring the ideal weight for men according to height: ideal weight in kilograms = 48 + 1.1 × (height in centimeters − 150 centimeters).
She pointed out the most important benefits of a healthy weight, which are enjoying a better feeling and appearance, feeling energetic, reducing the risk of disease, and improving the individual’s general health.
The lecture concluded with a set of recommendations, especially for people who suffer from excess weight, the most important of which are: maintaining a healthy weight and the normal range of the body mass index, balancing the amount of energy or the amount of calories consumed from food and drinks with the amount of energy consumed, adopting a low-calorie food strategy, paying attention to the size of food portions, planning a balanced nutritional program, changing lifestyle and getting rid of wrong eating habits.
This lecture achieves three goals of sustainable development: the third goal is good health and well-being, the fourth goal is quality education, and the seventeenth goal is establishing partnerships to achieve the goals.
