The lecturer in the theoretical sciences branch at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, Lect. Rasha Walid Taha, gave an awareness lecture for undergraduate students entitled (The electoral system adopted in the 2023 Iraqi elections).
Dr. Rasha classified the electoral systems into the proportional representation system, the majority system, and the mixed system, and the system adopted in Iraq is the proportional representation system calculated using the Saint Legault method, with each governorate being considered as a multiple electoral district for transfer, as well as adopting the multiple district system and independent nomination, and Iraq was divided to (83) multi-member electoral districts.
She also explained the mechanism of using the Saint-Lego system, which is the most famous electoral system in the world, which is based on filling the defects that other electoral systems carry, as it is a system used to distribute seats to competing blocs by dividing the number of votes obtained by the electoral list by the odd numbers 1, 3. , 5, 7, etc., and the number of these odd numbers is according to the number of parliamentary seats allocated to this electoral district in order to achieve a fair distribution among the competing lists.
This lecture is part of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth goal: quality education.
