The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, was organized under the patronage of its Dean, Prof. Dr. Fatima Abd Maleh, and under the supervision of the unit’s official, Prof. Dr. Huda Abdel Samie, in cooperation and coordination with a delegation from the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Nibras Muhammad Ali and Colonel Saif Sami Shawkat and First Lieutenant Rwain Abdel Hadi to hold an awareness lecture entitled (Suicide and Drugs and their Impact on Society).
The Ministry of Interior delegation explained the concept of suicide as killing oneself and a tragic reaction to stressful life situations, and there is no single reason behind anyone’s attempt to commit suicide, stressing that there are factors that increase the risk of attempting suicide, including depression, as it is the main risk factor for suicide, as well as psychological and mental disorders. , including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and firearms are the most common means of suicide, in addition to other common methods of taking a drug overdose, suffocation, and hanging.
They explained that drugs are a group of substances that cause addiction and poison the nervous system, and the word “narcotic” is used to describe something that dulls the mind, because it contains chemicals that lead to drowsiness, sleep, or the absence of consciousness, pointing to its many types and forms, whether natural (khat, opium, Morphine, hashish, cocaine, etc.), or from a synthetic source (heroin, amphetamines, etc.), as well as narcotic pills and volatile solvents, as well as its effects on the individual and society in terms of health, physical, psychological, social, economic, etc.
This lecture achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth goal: quality education, and the seventeenth goal: establishing partnerships to achieve the goals.
