The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, under the patronage of its Dean, Prof. Dr. Fatima Abd Maleh, and under the supervision of the head of its unit, Prof. Dr. Huda Abdel Samie hosted the psychotherapist and human development trainer in the Mental Health Office in the Baghdad Rusafa Health Department, Dr. Amir Al-Hasnawi to hold an awareness lecture for undergraduate students entitled (The psychological reasons behind drug abuse and suicide).
Dr. Al-Hasnawi explained the impact of psychological stress on the life of an individual in our society, as it causes acute and chronic changes in certain areas of the brain, which can cause long-term damage and often leads to the secretion of stress hormones that lead to thoughts of suicide or resorting to drugs.
He also classified the types of psychological stress into life pressures, unusual pressures, long-term and short-term pressures, in addition to their effect by increasing the secretions of body hormones such as adrenaline and cortisone, especially their short-term effect, which effectively reverses their long-term effect, which works to destroy the body.
Al-Hasnawi divided psychological diseases as a result of stresses that lead to mood disorders causing anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychosis, impulse control disorders, and sexual disorders, explaining at the same time their impact on decisions and the family.
The lecture concluded by providing treatment for psychological stress and its adverse impact on society through individual and group psychological treatment sessions, psychological support, educational guidance, occupational therapy, music, acting, crafts, and others.
This lecture achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth goal: quality education, and the seventeenth goal: establishing partnerships to achieve the goals.
