The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, held a scientific workshop entitled (Introduction to Alternative Medicine, Its Types and Uses), which was presented by the members of the branches of theoretical and teams, Prof. Dr. Suaad Abdul Hussein, Prof. Dr. Nada Abdul Salam, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zainab Ali Abdul Amir.

The lecturers explained the concept of alternative medicine, which is a group of therapeutic methods used alongside modern medicine, and its famous examples include medicinal herbs, Chinese medicine, yoga, hypnosis, and Chinese needles, referring to its famous scholars such as the scientist Al-Razi and the first Arab doctor Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Zakariya Al-Razi.

They also explained its most important benefits, including improving the patient’s quality of life by relieving pain, treating the actual cause of the disease and reducing the resulting symptoms, it is safer due to the use of natural materials, its costs are low compared to modern medicine, and easy access to the therapist with their availability.

They classified its types into acupuncture, which includes neck and back pain, nausea, depression and insomnia, anxiety and stress, energy healing medicine, chiropractic medicine, touch therapy, alternative herbal medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, yoga therapy medicine, adding that there is another type of alternative medicine, which is medicine using precious stones, believing that each disease has a precious stone, such as turquoise, which has a psychological effect and is an anti-palpitation and heart tonic and resists epilepsy, moonstone is useful in confronting female hormonal disorders and infertility cases, diamonds in treating various cases of paralysis, epilepsy and enlarged spleen, topaz to treat chest crises, and all diseases of the throat and larynx, in addition to infectious diseases such as measles, emerald is useful in treating cases of stress, skin diseases, and it is also useful in treating blood and liver diseases and sexual diseases, in addition to the other type, which is treatment using sand, especially in its treatments for skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, acne and other diseases. This workshop achieves one of the Sustainable Development Goals, the fourth goal: quality education.
