The Scientific Affairs Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, held a workshop entitled (Enhancing Language Skills through Physical Activity), which was presented by the members of the Team and theoretical branches, Prof. Dr. Iqbal Abdul Hussein, Lect. Dr. Sura Ahmed, Lect. Dr. Huda Shamel and Asst. Lect. Enaam Ghaleb.
The lecturers explained the concept of language skills, which is a set of abilities that an individual must learn when he wants to acquire a new language or practice the mother tongue, as these skills allow practicing any language and forming words and sentences for effective communication with other people, and its skills are divided into two parts, the first is receptive skills and the second is productive skills, stressing that language skills represent a connected circle interconnected with other skills such as listening, speaking, writing and reading.
They also explained the duties of the physical education teacher to develop student’s language skills, including presenting a new skill each time, the main goal of which is to provide students with a specific part of the language skill, providing opportunities to achieve this connection and integration to achieve integration with language skills, such as role-playing as a good example of achieving integration between language skills, preparing appropriate educational situations to present a skill through the practical presentation, paying attention to achieving optimal performance of the skill and enhancing it to achieve mastery, focusing on performing the skill and practicing it correctly and well, and providing effective positive reinforcement. This workshop achieves one of the goals of sustainable development, which is represented by the fourth goal, quality education.
