About the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Science for Girls

The College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences for Girls at the University of Baghdad was established to meet the needs of Iraqi society and educational institutions for specialized professionals with academic and practical qualifications in the fields of physical and sports education. This initiative aims to support community development goals and to keep pace with contemporary advancements.

  Physical education, with its modern philosophy, dedicates opportunities to talents, encourages good morals, and promotes patriotism and sports, which calls for supporting everything that is healthy and clean, based on the right of young people to development and active participation, as well as promoting productive work to supplement the national economy, considering that the practice of sports As a pattern that is crowned with health, work and production, and believing in the importance of interaction and strengthening relations with the local community, the college is working to provide and create the appropriate environment for holding many different sports training programs and courses in order to make its contribution to seeking to develop the scientific knowledge necessary for workers in various sports fields. In the beginning, a branch of physical education was established in 1956, where it was affiliated with the College of Education for Girls in Bab Al-Moadham. The first course for female students graduated in 1960, when they were awarded a bachelor’s degree in physical education sciences.

The Department of Physical Education was established in the College of Education for Girls in 1984 and occupied the current building of the college and was headed by Dr. Aqil Al-Kateb at the time until 1990, Dr. Akram Sobhi from (1990-1994) and Dr. Wajih Mahjoub from (1994-1996).

The Faculty of Physical Education for Girls was established based on the need to develop the infrastructure for women’s sports and to achieve the goals of higher education and scientific research. The decision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research was issued to transfer the department to the Faculty of Physical Education for Girls. The Deanship of the College was headed by Dr. Sadiq Faraj Diab (1996-2001), then Dr. Muayyad Abdullah Jassim (2001-2003) and Dr. Wedad Muhammad Rashad Al-Mufti (2003-2005), then Dr. Nawal Mahdi Al-Obaidi took over the Deanship of the Faculty of Physical Education for Girls (2005-2011), then Prof. Mona Taleb Thabet took the Deanship of the Faculty of Physical Education for Girls (2011-2014), and then Prof. Dr. Mawahib Hamid Noaman took over the Deanship of the Faculty of Physical Education for Girls (2014-2015) and then took over Dean Dr. Intisar Owaid (2015-2016), then Dr. Suhad Qasem Saeed took over the deanship of the college (2016-2019), then Dr. Bushra Kazem Abdul Reda (2019-2021) and then Prof. Dr. Fatima Abdel Maleh from 2021 until now.

College Branches:-

Theoretical Sciences Branch was established in 1995 AD and includes study subjects (sports training science – training physiology – rehabilitation of sports injuries – anatomy – scout education – history – computer – Arabic language – English language – rights and democracy – teaching methods – tests and measurement – biomechanics and kinetic analysis – kinesthetic learning – Mathematical Statistics – Scientific Research – Characteristics Sport – Psychology – Management and Organization)

The Team Games Branch was established in 1995 and includes the study subjects for team games (basketball – volleyball – football – handball).

The Single Games Branch was established in 1995 and includes study subjects for single games (athletics – rhythmic gymnastics – gymnastics equipment – racket games – fencing – shooting – fitness – swimming).

The college also includes a large indoor gym for basketball, volleyball, football and handball. And outdoor playgrounds for the team games themselves, a court for racquet games (tennis and badminton), a hall for rhythmic gymnastics and equipment, a hall for fencing and another for shooting, a fitness room and a sauna

There are 339 female students in the college at the undergraduate level, and (138) female students in postgraduate studies, masters and doctorates, and specialization certificates are granted in physical education and sports sciences.

The College of Physical Education and Sports Science for Girls includes a group of  teachers who hold higher education degrees in various disciplines of physical education sciences, their number is (77) to cover all branches of scientific and practical knowledge. The college also includes a number of specialized administrative and technical staff, whose number reaches (88) employee.
