The official of the Division of Quality Assurance and University Performance at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls\ University of Baghdad, Ms. Dr. Baida Tariq Abdel-Wahed, hosted the Director of Quality at the General Company for Electric Power Production for the Central Region, Eng. Muhannad Shaker Mahmoud, to hold a scientific symposium for the faculty members and students entitled (Climate Change On Iraq, reasons and solutions).
As the engineer explained the concept of climate change as long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, and they can be considered natural shifts, but since the 19th century, human activities have become the main cause of climate change, due to the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil, which results in gases that trap Heat, explaining global warming, which is the phenomenon of global warming as a result of heat retention between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface as a result of the accumulation of greenhouse gases that prevent heat from escaping outside the atmosphere.
He referred to the types of greenhouse gases that cause heat retention are (CH4-N2O-CO2-O3), noting what risks Iraq will face as a result of climatic changes during the coming period: violent and frequent dust storms, lands threatened with desertification, drying up of water bodies and lakes and a drop in river levels. Scarcity of agricultural crops and shrinking vegetation cover, which affects livestock, destabilization of food security, spread of epidemic diseases and famines, destabilization of national security, spread of unrest and demonstrations, spread of crime, environmental pollution and high temperatures, economic effects as a result of low demand for fuel.
The Engineer Muhannad Shaker concluded the symposium by presenting a set of solutions and proposals to confront these problems and reduce their effects, including issuing binding laws to criminalize tampering with fruit trees and bulldozing orchards and green areas and working seriously to implement these laws, launching large campaigns for afforestation and cultivation of green plants and evergreen trees, especially those that do not need large quantities of water and increasing green vegetation cover, working on launching large projects to manage water resources properly and using modern technologies in watering and irrigation such as drip irrigation and others, controlling and regulating the use of groundwater as it represents the strategic storage of water in the country in case of crises and organizing the process of digging wells for irrigation, Adopting wastewater treatment projects in all regions of Iraq and diverting it to irrigate green belts and farms with the adoption of modern irrigation technologies, working to manage energy consumption in a regular and effective manner, enacting a waste recycling law to get rid of waste harmful to the environment and reuse it to achieve economic benefits for the country, financing waste diversion projects To Energy (WTE) to generate electricity and dispose of waste at the same time, launch large-scale media campaigns on all local media channels to educate and raise awareness on this subject.
