The Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, organized a specialized workshop titled “Occupational Safety in Computer Laboratories.” The session was presented by Lecturer Rasha Majid Hassoun and Lecturer Liqa’ Mohammed Shuhai from the Department of Theoretical Sciences.
The workshop highlighted the concept of occupational safety within computer laboratories, defining it as a set of organizational and preventive rules designed to protect individuals and equipment from potential hazards. This importance arises from the nature of the laboratory, which contains electrical devices and cabling that may pose a source of accidents.
The lecturers explained that adherence to safety guidelines significantly contributes to reducing injury risks among the girls, preserving equipment integrity, and fostering a secure educational environment.
The session reviewed risks associated with computer labs, including electrical hazards from damaged wiring, physical hazards such as tripping over cables, and health risks resulting from prolonged screen time, such as back pain and eye strain. Preventive instructions were provided, including wire management and adopting correct sitting postures.
The workshop concluded with recommendations to enhance the culture of occupational safety among the girls through awareness programs and periodic maintenance. The lecturers noted that strict compliance with safety procedures supports the Fourth Sustainable Development Goal by ensuring a healthy and safe learning environment that enhances the educational process.
