The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls, University of Baghdad, organised a workshop titled (Introducing Students to Mental Health Awareness and the Societal Risks of Negative Phenomena They Face). The workshop was presented by the members of the Individual Games Department: Lect. Dr. Raghdaa Fouad, Lect. Dr Hind Salem and Lect. Dr. Huda Edan.
The presenters highlighted the strong connection between mental and physical health, explaining that psychological stress can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches and muscle pain. Persistent anxiety may also result in health issues like a weakened immune system and heart disease. Some of the most common mental health disorders include depression, sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
They also discussed key factors influencing mental health, which can be classified into Individual factors such as genetics and personality, Social factors like social support and relationships, and Environmental factors, including economic and living conditions. Additionally, they emphasised the crucial role of family and friends in supporting individuals through active listening, providing emotional support, encouraging treatment, promoting healthy habits, and maintaining a continuous presence.
The workshop also addressed the impact of mental health issues on students and society, along with the negative consequences such as Declining academic performance, Increased unemployment and crime rates, Deterioration of social relationships, and A rise in economic and healthcare burdens.
At the end of the workshop, the instructors presented several key recommendations, emphasising the importance of recognising the role of mental health in daily life, the need to strengthen family and social support, and the significance of preventive measures to ensure balanced mental well-being.
This workshop contributed directly to achieving the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focuses on ensuring quality education that raises awareness about mental health and its impact on individuals and society.
