The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls/ University of Baghdad held a training course titled (Using Modern Technology (Photo Finish) to Record Championship Results in Athletics). The Lect. Dr. Hind Salem Tayeh, a faculty member from the Individual Sports Department, presented the course with the participation of Lecturer Muhannad Imad Majeed from Al-Mansour University College.

The course provided a detailed explanation of the Photo Finish technology, which is considered one of the most modern and essential tools in track and field sports. It accurately determines the winner in races where the results are incredibly close. This technology relies on high-speed cameras capable of capturing precise images of runners as they cross the finish line, with time intervals measured in fractions of a second. This allows for a highly detailed and accurate analysis of each movement.

Additionally, the course addressed the division of operational teams based on different device functions, including recording athletes’ data using the Pad Lynx system, finish line tracking cameras, false start detection devices, result extraction and printing, screen display systems, and laser measurement devices used in the Photo Finish Laser Measurement technique.

Both lecturers emphasized the importance of this technology in reducing human error that may occur when determining winners based solely on observation. Instead, this method depends on recorded images that capture the final moment of the race, ensuring fair and accurate results. This marks a significant advancement in the field of athletics. Besides promoting fairness in sports, this technology also fosters trust among athletes, organizers, and the audience.

The course aligns with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
