The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-Up Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Girls/ University of Baghdad, under the patronage of Dean Prof. Dr. Fatima Abd Maleh and the supervision of Asst. Lect. Safia Ihsan hosted Dr. Sara Ziyad from the College of Imam Al-Azam to conduct a workshop titled Promoting Health for All Towards a Sustainable Healthy Life).
The workshop focused on the concept of sustainable development, which emphasizes meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This global goal is embodied in 17 key pillars established by the United Nations under the theme of Our Common Future).
Dr. Sara discussed the vital role of regular physical activity in promoting public health, highlighting its numerous benefits: improving cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of heart disease by up to 30%, strengthening muscles and bones to prevent osteoporosis and reducing fracture risks, managing weight through calorie burning and maintaining a healthy weight, enhancing mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, promoting better sleep and increased energy levels, and aiding in the prevention of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. She also emphasized the importance of regular exercise as an effective means of improving mental well-being by enhancing mood, boosting self-confidence, and stimulating cognitive functions.
The session also shed light on women’s influential role in spreading a culture of health awareness within society. This can be achieved through impactful family, workplace, and community initiatives. Dr. Sara outlined several ways women can lead in this area, such as being a role model, contributing to health education, participating in community initiatives, leveraging media and social platforms to raise awareness, and taking on leadership roles in the workplace.
The workshop successfully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
