Under the patronage of the Dean, Prof. Dr Fatima Abd Malih, the Career Development and Employment Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences for Women, University of Baghdad, hosted Asst. Prof. Dr. Aws Mahmood Ahmed from the Center for Continuing Education at the University of Baghdad, under the supervision of Unit Head Safia Ihsan Kamil, to deliver a scientific workshop titled (The Role of Higher Education in Supporting Employment in the Private Sector).
The workshop aimed to analyse and clarify the role of higher education in promoting employment within the private sector, activating the role of governmental bodies—mainly the Ministry of Planning—in managing data and guiding policies according to labour market needs, proposing practical steps for graduate employment, and maximising the benefit of humanities disciplines.
The lecturer emphasised the importance of the private sector, which includes institutions and companies owned by individuals or groups, relies on productivity and competition, and acts as a major driver of economic growth and youth employment by providing diverse job opportunities.
He also highlighted that the private-sector labour market requires several skills, including prior experience, soft skills (such as communication, teamwork, persuasion, critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional flexibility), and practical knowledge of digital applications.
He further addressed the role of higher education and the Ministry of Planning in meeting labour-market needs by developing national strategies that identify future requirements of economic sectors, establishing partnerships between educational institutions and labour-market demands, and integrating practical pathways linked to the private sector.
The workshop concluded with several key recommendations, including: strengthening career-guidance centers within universities, developing a unified national labor-market database, activating digital-skills programs for all disciplines, supporting women’s entrepreneurship, enhancing incentives for companies to employ graduates, launching joint initiatives between higher education and the Ministry of Planning to track market trends, and establishing continuous training programs based on real-world needs.
This workshop supports two Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
